The cultivation of seedlings was introduced to support the long term Forest Rehabilitation Projects in Korea. Since 1968, Forest Genetic Research Institute had established and managed seed banks from which most seedlings of the 21 major commercial species have been supplied. On April 5, 1992, the National Reforestation Monument was built at Gwangnung National Arboretum to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the rehabilitation projects. Currently, Korean forestry is facing new challenges as the policy priorities have advanced to the next level. Planting of trees will no longer be focused on greening and rehabilitation. It will take into consideration forest functions and geographical features to develop forest resources with higher economic and environmental values. |
