Youth unemployment has become a serious problem in many countries around the world. Not only is it that the youth are not given enough opportunities in the job market, they’re also not trained for the skills that employers require them to have. By giving college students majoring in forest related area opportunity to work abroad in companies and international organizations, students can have better idea of the skills they need to acquire and pre-experience the work life that they will encounter in the future.
Starting from 2009, the Korea Forest Service has been providing internship programs by connecting 30 students with 25 companies and 5 international organizations including FAO, ITTO and UNCCD. For private sector internship program, 70% of the budget needed for the internship is supported by the KFS and 100% for international organization internship programs. Through this internship program 201 students have completed the internship program in 15 countries.
