The National Forest Seed Variety Center(NFSV) is an agency affiliated with the Korea Forest service. NFSV was launched on August 12, 2008 as a result of an expansion and reorganization of the Forest Seed Research Center of Korea Forest Research Institute. Our center consists of two supporting team and two departments - the Department of Plant Variety Protection and Department of Seed and Seedling Management as well as 4 branch offices. Our center manages 1,048ha of seed orchard.
NFSV is charged with the forward looking mission to create Green Growth by protecting varieties and managing forest resources.
To accomplish this goal of Green Growth, NFSV performs the following duties - establishing an early stage system for forest plant seed protection, supporting individual breeders, promoting examination, registration and application for seed and variety protection, as well as other consultative services.
NFSV also produces and distributes improved seed and seedlings from its seed orchards, the main source of such forest resources in Korea, where Elite Trees have been cultivated since 1968. In doing this, NFSV has established a national management system for forest seed and varieties.
We are also playing a significant role in approving export of genetic resources from the perspective of conservation management of forest resources. NFSV also conducts systematic management in mapping DNA fingerprints of its genetic resources, distributing and exploiting these resources.
We hope to realize the vision of NFSV to improve the system for plant variety protection and increase productivity of seed and seedlings up to 100 percent by 2030. In order to do so, we will carry out core tasks- to promote the development of new varieties by establishing a system of protection for forest varieties, to set up a system of national management for forest seeds and seedlings, to increase its productivity, to establish a system of management for forest genetic resources and promote its use.
