Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative (FERI)

The objective of the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative (FERI) is to provide support to developing countries to achieve the Aichi Target by promoting the implementation of the forest ecosystem restoration. The period of the Initiative is from 2015 to 2020, implemented by the Secretariat of CBD.

The Initiative provides policy support and technical capacity building to developing countries in order to implement forest ecosystem restoration.

The Initiative was proposed and adopted in October 2014, at the 12th Conference of the Parties of CBD in Pyeongchang, Korea. Then the MOU between the Korea Forest Service and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity on Implementation of the Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative was signed on 21 March 2015, and the FERI Partner meeting was held on the same day. Side events regarding FERI was held at the 11th UNFF Conference in New York, 14 May 2015, UNCCD COP12 in Turkey in October 2015, and CBD SBSTTA 20 in Montreal in April 2016. Advisory meeting was also held at UNFCCC COP21 in France in April 2015. The Initiative has been implemented in different regions. The first FERI capacity building workshop for West Africa was held in Ghana in October 2015. The second workshop for Latin America was held in Columbia in April 2016, and the third workshop for Asia was held in Thailand in June 2016.

In consultation with the CBD and forest-related international organizations, the Initiative has provided support to restoration projects in developing countries. The CBD has sellected and implemented projects in Guatemala, Chile and Columbia in collaboration with international organizations, including Bioversity and ITTO.
