WarmTemperate & Subtropical Forest Research Center

PRINT

The Warm Temperate and Subtropical Forest Research Center is located in Jeju Island, southernmost part of Korea. The Center implements researches to conserve and utilize the warm-temperate and subtropical forest ecosystems and forest resources. To achieve the goal, the Center adopts a strategy of production of creative and pragmatic research outcomes based on 3,000 hectares of experimental forest in Jeju Island. The strategy is now materialized through operational programs including strengthening research functions and global network on monitoring of warm-temperate and subtropical forests biota, extending multi-disciplinary research on Gotjawal, lava-field forest, setting a platform for integrated subtropical island forest management plans. Particular emphasis are given to the following research topics: climate change and subtropical forest ecosystem; exploring, collecting and preserving warm-temperate and subtropical forest biological resources; cultivating and distribution of subtropical tree species; and conservation and utilization of lava-field forest. Recently, the Center is exploring new approaches for warm-temperate and subtropical island forest management scheme by developing customized management techniques to promote their value.
