A burial service is the most common funeral custom in Korea so the area of burial grounds accounts for 1 % of the total landmass, equivalent to a half residential area. Burial grounds are mostly located in forest hills looking down magnificent scenery, which consequently causes forest disasters, landslides and damage to rich forests. To lessen this damage, tree burial has been introduced. It is a kind of funeral service in which the ashes from cremation are buried under selected trees.

The Korean government has enacted the Law of Funeral and legislated the tree burial system. Further, the KFS has been testing and operating tree burial forests in national forests so tree burial has gained a great deal of attention. More civic leaders are choosing tree burial service for themselves, their families and ancestors, which brings a positive influence on the funeral culture.
