Double pleasure from forests and the ocean together!
A costal recreation forest designed in Samcheok, Gangwon Province.

A coastal recreation forest named Gumbong recreation forest with seven cottages in the forest and a wild flower exhibition hall will have been built up by 2007 in Wonduck myeon around Mt. Gumbong in Samchuck. The area is well- located 4.5km away from the east sea so citizens can take pleasure from not only forests but also the ocean.

The National Forest Station is embarking on the construction this April, having designed the plan in order to supply the increasing demand of citizens for recreation forests due to the regularization of five working days.

This project with the budget of 3 million dollars includes the construction of seven cottages in the forest, a 6km hiking track, forest education facilities and a wild flower exhibition hall. In particular, there will be an observation platform for sunrise of the east sea, which is expected to appeal to tourists as one scenic view of fascinating spots.
“Our plan is that the current roads will be used as an access road in order to minimize damage to nature and that other facilities will be constructed in an environmentally sound way with full use of nature features" said Sung Bu-geun, Chief of National Forest Station, adding that they will also focus on developing diversely the forest cultural contents of the combination of forests and the ocean.

There are 98 recreation forests nationwide: 31 of them are national, 50 public and 17 municipal. One more plan is to increase national recreation forests to 40 ones gradually by 2010.
