The Korea Forest Service, Forest For Life(NGO) and Yuhan-Kimberly Ltd. invited publicly elementary, middle and high schools for 2008 school forest funds from April 23 to June 8. The total applicant schools were 402, which was highly competitive, and 86 model schools were selected.
These selected schools with poor exterior environments are expected to have better and educationally efficient environments by implementation of the school forest project. These schools will be provided with annual financial support of around 10,000 USD for three years and with technical support of nonofficial experts.
The school forest project aims to create forests around the schools for better educational environment, thereby expanding urban forests, generating opportunities to students for nature-learning and humanity development, and also providing resting places with greenery for residents.
As part of the urban forest creating project by the Korea Forest Service, this project has great significance that management, construction and maintenance of school forests will be performed in concert with students, school teachers, residents and parents of students. Further, the government, the NGO, and the corporation jointly undertake this project, which is said to be an advanced cooperation.
