The ROK, Japan and China put their heads together to combat desertification in Northeast Asia.

The 2nd Trilateral Director General Level Meeting on Forestry Cooperation among Republic of Korea, Japan and the People's Republic of China was hosted in Jeju, Republic of Korea on the 22nd of January, 2015.

The three countries gathered to make constructive discussions on major forest issues in Northeast Asia.
Korea Forest Service (KFS) Minister, Dr. SHIN Won Sop opened the 2nd Meeting with head delegates from Japan and China, Mr. HONGO Koji, Director General of Private Forest Department, Forest Agency and Mr. SU Chunyu, Director General, Department of International Cooperation, State Forestry Administration.

At the 2nd meeting, five shared issues were discussed including DLDD (Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought) in Northeast Asia, measures against mountain disaster, forest certification schemes, forest recreation, healing and education, and cooperation on international forest issues.

In order to make practical cooperation on agreements made at the 2nd meeting, it was agreed to forge the action plan. Through working-level discussions among the three sides, this action plan will shape up in detail and be carried out accordingly.

Dr. LEE Chang-jae, Director General of International Affairs Bureau, KFS ensured that KFS continues to enhance the trilateral forestry cooperation thereby yielding further co-benefits.

In addition, the Joint Statement of Cooperation on Sustainable Forest Management, Combating Desertification and Wildlife Conservation was adopted during the 5th Trilateral Summit in 2012. The Trilateral Director General Level Meeting on Forestry Cooperation is as part of concerted efforts to implement the Statement.
