Forest fire damage decreased significantly for 3 consecutive years, KFS recognizes support and contribution of related agencies
Korea Forest Service reported that 370 cases of forest fires were reported nationwide this year as of December 15. Records from 1960''s show that the damages of forest fire have decreased significantly since 2006 for 3 consecutive years.
Korea Forest Service stepped up its forecasting system, fire simulation program and other scientific prevention efforts. High-tech gadgets like surveillance camera, remote control fire suppression have contributed, as well.
10-year average of annual forest fire(401cases) have decreased 33%, however as the number dry days have grew compare to the 10-year average, twice as many forest fires have occurred in the fall season.
Korea Forest Service designated this year as the "Year of Preventing Forest Fire to Protect Cultural Heritage". Intense efforts have been made to implement forest management and tending projects in around 43 temples with national treasure and heritage.
In honor of those who contributed to forest fire prevention efforts, Korea Forest Service presented official merits to related agencies and individuals on the 19th recognizing and acknowledging their service.
