DATE : 2007-09-05

HITS : 3535

The Korea Forest Service(KFS) is holding a conference to discuss establishment of the Northeast Asia Forest Network(NEAFN) with delegations of China, Japan, Mongolia and the UNCCD on Sep. 18, 2007 in Seoul

The KFS is willing to promote joint efforts in northeast Asia to control desertification and its impacts, especially dust and sandstorms causing environmental problems within the area.

In this context, the KFS has made a plantation project in Mongolia, titled ’Greenbelt Plantation Project’ in cooperation with Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment. 9.5 million US$ of the total project budget is to put for 10 years from 2007 to 2016, and 3,000ha of desert areas in Mongolia will be planted.

At the conference, delegates of China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea and the UNCCD will be making presentations on their desertification control policies and having a multilateral discussion about establishment of the NEAFN. The key agenda of this conference includes countermeasures against desertification and dust and sandstorms, and sharing information on forest pests and diseases, and relevant researches.

When the agreement on the NEAFN establishment is reached, the network will consist of a working level meeting and a high level meeting, and member countries will host the conference in an alphabetical order every year.

It is expected for the future that good plantation practices on desertification prevention by the network may be suggested at the international level, thereby raising awareness of global environment conservation and enhancing cooperation in related fields.
