There are increasing concerns about forest pests and diseases such as pine wilt disease and oak wilt disease as well as their wider spread. In this regard the Korea Forest Service is planning to enact a comprehensive act entitled ''Special Act on Forest Pests and Diseases Prevention'' integrating revised regulations under ''Act on Pine Wilt Disease Prevention'' and relevant regulations under ''Act on the Promotion and Management of Forest Resources''.


The Special Act on Forest Pests and Diseases Prevention aims to mobilize budgets and human resources faster at the early stage, to enhance early prevention, and to establish a consistent prevention system.


Further, the special act will comprise observation and prevention processes, regulations on establishment and management of Forest Pests and Diseases Prevention Agency, and designation processes of forest pests and disease prevention areas.


In line with this act, some severely affected counties will organize a permanent observation unit for regular observation, prompt control and aero observation with camera-equipped helicopters. An oak wilt disease control office will be established and diverse prevention methods will be applied, introducing a simple fumigation injection. Moreover, the Korea Forest Research Institute will enhance research capacity in forest pests and diseases.






The Korea Forest Service asks regional forest offices and forest departments of local governments to report detection of affected pine and oak trees and other forest pests and diseases, striving to formulate the special act.
