- KFS signed an MOU to contribute to international carbon reduction goals
The Korea Forest Service (KFS), under the leadership of Minister LIM Sang-seop, announced on the 8th that it will expand cooperation in the forestry sector in the framework of the signed MOU with the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry to strengthen its capacity to respond to global climate change.
The KFS and the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry have renewed the MOU, which was originally set to expire in October this year, until 2029. In order to achieve Korea's ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Strategy' and Indonesia's ‘GHG reduction strategy (aka the FOLU Net Sink 2030)', the scope of cooperation has been expanded from sustainable forest management to international climate change response.
The KFS has been continuously cooperating with Indonesia in the forestry sector for about 10 years. From 2015 to 2017, it completed a forest eco-tourism project utilizing the beautiful ecological and scenic resources of Lombok Island. From 2019 to 2022, it successfully restored 1,200 hectares of forest damaged by a large-scale wildfire in the Jambi peatland.
Moreover, by 2026, the KFS plans to complete the establishment of a wildfire disaster management system in South Sumatra, spreading Korea's advanced forest restoration and disaster management system.
NAM Song Hee, Director General of International Affairs Bureau at the KFS, said, "Indonesia has the largest area of peatlands and mangrove forests, which absorb and store carbon.” He added, "By sharing Korea's excellent forest management methods and forest disaster response system, we will contribute to achieving the international community's common goal of reducing carbon emissions.”
