Anmyeon-do Recreation Forest was introduced in the FAO publication titled "In Search of Excellence: Exemplary forest management in Asia and the Pacific"

Anmyeon-do recreation forest of Korea was recognized as one the 28 cases of exemplary forest management in Asia Pacific region. The compilation of exemplary cases was published by FAO Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission(APFC) and distributed during the recent seventeenth session of FAO forestry committee. regional commission is composed of 29 member states including Republic of Korea, Japan, China, India, Australia. The Commission was established in 1949 holding biennial meeting to provide coordination and expert advisory for forestry in the region.

The pine forests of Anmyeon-do is aged 80~120 years and was well managed since the Chosun Dynasty. During this dynasty forest areas reserved for timber supply were demarcated by stone markers called the "Bongpyo." The marked forests were given special attention after the independence. In the past, the pine forests produced timber for royal purposes and in the present, they play a significant role as the windbreak and recreation.

The forests cover about 43% or 5,175 ha of Anmyeon-do. 3,890 ha is provincial forest, 175 ha is national recreation forest, 115 ha is designated as protected natural forest. 230 ha is managed by Korea Forest Research Institute as a seed orchard.

The underlying recreational, ecological, and biodivesity functions of Anmyeon-do forests provide multiple benefits.
The multifunctionality conserved for more than thousand years has contributed in achieving the international recognition.
