Myanmar's Public Officials Learn Successful Forestation Method from S. Korea

Yeongdong which has been affected by massive forest fires annually, is rising as a forestation site for foreigners to visit.

Four public officials from the Myanmar Forest Department, under the auspices of the Korean International Cooperation Agency, visited Chogok-ri, Keundeok-myeon, Samcheok, affected by forest fires, on August 30, carrying out a survey for two hours with the guidance of personnel from Samcheok National Forest Management Office.

The Forest fire which occurred in Samcheok in April 2000 destroyed 19,000 ha of forests for 9 days, of which 8,000 ha was national forests. Its forest restoration projects were completed this year. "As it has a number of waste lands due to forest clearing, Miyanma urgently needs to carry out forestation," said Miyanma's public officials. "Korea's successful forestations in a short time have been exemplary benchmarks." They also asked a flood of questions on forestation tree species boosting economical efficiency.

Back in July, a Chinese forestation training group, consisting of professors and forest authority executives, visited Samcheok area in order to learn how to extinguish fire by using helicopters. "Foreign training groups' visits prove that the nation's forestation and silviculture technololgies are acknowledged worldwide," said an official in the eastern regional forest management office.
