3rd REDD+ International Symposium

The 3rd REDD+ International Symposium, "REDD+ Regime and Governance: from global to local," was held by the Korea Forest Service (KFS) and the National Assembly Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee, on August 21, 2014 at the auditorium of the National Assembly Library, Seoul. The Symposium was also organized by the Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI), and was supported by the National Assembly Climate Change Forum.

The keynote speech was delivered by Mr. Yvo de Boer, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and current Director General of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), on "International Climate Change Negotiations and REDD+."

Mr. Yvo de Boer stressed that the climate change area has evolved enormously in the 20 year period, not only in terms of science and understanding climate change, but also in terms of the politics of climate change. Therefore, in order to make an agreement in the future climate change negotiations, the very thing to do is to keep things simple. Still, he ended his speech with a hopeful message saying that he believes "the outcome in Paris will be a success and there will be an agreement, because the world wants an agreement."

A total of two sessions were hold to address the REDD+ at different levels: international, national, and project level. Participants included speakers from international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), etc. and government representatives from Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao PDR.
