The Korea Forest Service (KFS), under the leadership of Minister LIM Sang-seop, hosted the International Day of Forests 2025 on March 21 at the Korea National Arboretum in collaboration with the Asia Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO).
The United Nations proclaimed March 21 as the International Day of Forests to raise awareness of the significance of forests, and this year’s theme was "Forests and Foods."
This theme underscores the global food crisis, which has been worsened by climate change, and emphasizes the need for enhanced international cooperation and solidarity to promote sustainable forest management as a response.
The event was attended by various intergovernmental organizations, including CHUNG Keeyong, Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as embassies from 18 countries, including the United States, Germany, the Philippines, and Kazakhstan, along with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Asia Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO). This reaffirmed the importance of global forest cooperation and solidarity.
In the policy session, the KFS outlined its commitment to playing a central role in tackling global challenges such as climate change and introduced the K-FOREST FOR ALL brand to reinforce international forest cooperation.
Through the launch of K-FOREST FOR ALL, the KFS unveiled plans to concentrate on four key areas:
① K-REDD+ for Climate Resilience
② K-Restoration for the Earth
③ Livelihood for People
④ K-Risk Management for Safety
Minister LIM Sang-seop stressed, "Forests are a crucial resource interconnected with various global challenges, including poverty, hunger, food security, climate change, and desertification." He added, "With this international forest cooperation brand, we will expand our efforts and work toward becoming a global leader in green initiatives."
