Fireproofed DMZ

The Korea Forest Service (Minister Shin, Won Sop) installed fire hydrants along the southern border and at each guard post of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) for effective prevention of wildfires. Wildfire outbreaks have frequently happened in the DMZ due to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s weeding operations each year. The DMZ being an air space restricted area, the Republic of Korea (ROK) could not actively put out fire and stopped it from spreading to the ROK. Since 2010, with newly installed 25 fire hydrants, there has not been a single case where fire originated from the northern border damaged the ROK. The Korea Forest Service (KFS) believes that fire hydrants would continue to help fight fire before it does any damage in the ROK.
