KFS aviation body marks 41st anniversary with book
The Forest Aviation Headquarters of the Korea Forest Service, a Seoul-based agency that provides aerial services to cope with natural and man-made disasters, celebrated its 41st anniversary on September 19 with a book that chronicles its meteoric growth.
The book, titled “The 40-year History of the Forest Headquarters of the Korea Forest Service,” was launched on the occasion of the anniversary at the Convention Center of the Gimpo Airport, western Seoul, in the presence of about 300 former and incumbent staff.
In tandem with the nation’s rags-to-riches economic growth following the 1950-53 Korean War, the book describes how the Forest Aviation Headquarters has evolved from a poorly-prepared body with 3 helicopters, three pilots and three maintenance staff since it was launched in 1971.Currently equipped with 47 helicopters and about 330 staff, the Forest Aviation Headquarters is a top-tier aviation service agency of Korea that provides various emergency services including curbing forest pests and wildfires, saving stranded mountain climbers and controlling urban fires.
The book also recounts tragic moments of the agency when the lives of its staffers were lost in the line of duty. It was given as a gift to the retired staff at the ceremony.
“This ceremony is to commemorate the outcomes we have achieved in the presence of our predecessors and also to share the vision for the second leap forward we will make after the relocation of our office in 2013,” Lee Kyoung-il, chief of the Forest Aviation Headquarters, said.
The forest aviation agency is to be moved out of Seoul to Wonju, Gangwon Province, by 2013 as part of the government relocation project aimed at balanced development of the nation.
