KFS Discusses Introduction of Siberian Tigers with China

Korea Forest Service said on September 13 that its chief Cho Yon-hwan, who paid a visit to China from September 9 through 15, had consultations with Ju Saeng-hyun, head of China's National Forestry Bureau, to discuss a joint research on the introduction of natural enemy for the control of pine wilt disease, as well as a way to bring in a couple of Siberian tigers into Korea prior to December.

They concluded that in order to prevent and exterminate pine wilt disease, Korea Forest Research Institute and Chinese Forestry Scientific Research Institute would complete development of technology making use of natural enemy of its medium within a short period of time. Also, they decided to import a couple of Siberian tigers into Korea before the mid-December.

Back in 1993, when President Kim Yeong-sam visited China, then Chinese President Jiang Zemin presented Siberian tigers to him; yet later Korea failed to breed them.

The two sides agreed to reinvigorate joint efforts to preserve Mt. Baekdu natural ecosystem, in addition to exchanges at local level.

China called on Korea to continue to participate in the anti-desertification project that comes to an end this year, and the two sides decided to discuss working-level forestry cooperation in Korea-China Forestry Collaboration Committee to be held from October 13 through 16 in Daejeon, Korea.
