Korean Peninsula＇s Core Ecological Backbone Baekdu Daegan Mountain System to Revive




The government is set to provide a basis for protecting one of the Korean peninsula＇s core ecological backbones Baekdu Daegan Mountain System from indiscriminate development, as well as managing it on a systematic basis.

Baekdu Daegan Mountain System Protection Committee, presided over by Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, was recently held in the government complex, and made a final decision on a 263,000 ha Baekdu Daegan Mountain System protection zone.

Areas adjacent to ridges, stretching from Hyangro Peak in Goseong-gun, Gangwon province all the way to Cheonwang Peak of Mt. Jiri in Sangcheong-gun, Gyeongnam province were designated as Baekdu Daegan Mountain System protection zone, in which such development acts as the construction of structures other than those required for the sake of public purposes, including national defense and military facilities, in addition to roads, waterways, and railroads, and gathering of earth and rocks will be strictly restricted in accordance with the Act on the Protection of Baekdu Daegan Mountain System.

Moreover, the government said it will formulate a basic plan for the protection of Baekdu Daegan Mountain System in the second half of this year to press ahead with a project to restore and connect the spoiled or severed parts of Baekdu Daegan Mountain System in a nature-friendly manner, and to systematically carry out the purchasing of private land and projects to aid residents.

Baekdu Daegan Mountain System Protection Committee, which is aimed to reflect on the key matters with regard to Baekdu Daegan Mountain System, including designation of Baekdu Daegan Mountain System protection zone, consists of a total of 23 members - Prime Minister as its chair, ministers of relevant ministries and departments, heads of local governments in six metropolitan cities, and private experts.
