The Korea Forest Service(KFS) has realized the seriousness of Oak wilt disease and researched the status of oak wilt disease and the prevention methods since the disease was identified in Gyeonggi province in August, 2004 for the first time. On August 30, 2006, KFS held the discussion meeting at Samyook University in Taeneung in order to enhance the countermeasures focused on the field and made a presentation of researches.
Most infections of Oak wilt disease are initiated by fungal spores(Raffaelea sp) transported on the bodies of sap feeding Nitidulid beetles around mid May, and around late July infected oak trees get withered and die turning red. Dead trees don’t shed their leaves even in winter, which spoils the scenic beauty.
The director of Forest Disease and Pest Control Team, KFS, said that the problem is that even infected trees are cut off and removed completely, there are trees that remain latently infected. To resolve this problem, researchers at the Korea Forest Research Institute should study in various prevention methods, and applicable methods and countermeasures should be discussed among concerned officials, added the director.
