Youth Forest Leaders Explore Mongolia for Climate Action
- Youth in Action: Forest Cooperation and Tree Planting to Combat Desertification -
The Korea Forest Service (KFS), led by Minister LIM Sang-seop, announced on the 25th that the 2025 Global Leadership Program, held from July 22 in Mongolia, was jointly organized by the KFS and the Korea Green Ranger.
A total of 26 participants ? youth and instructors from the Korea Green Ranger ? took part in the program. They visited Terelj National Park, Ulaanbaatar, and Lun Soum, where they engaged in a variety of activities, including planting trees, visiting afforestation sites, exploring Mongolia’s traditional culture and historical landmarks, and participating in youth cultural exchange programs.
The program aims to foster youth as forest leaders who recognize the importance of climate change response and ecosystem conservation to take meaningful action.
In particular, the youth team visited afforestation projects and nurseries in Lun Soum established under the Korea-Mongolia Greenbelt Project. They also planted trees in restored desertified areas, gaining firsthand insight into the importance of international cooperation and climate action.
Since 2016, the KFS has consistently sent youth forest leaders to Mongolia to plant trees to combat the country’s rapid desertification driven by climate change.
SONG Jun Ho, Director General of the Forest Welfare Bureau at the KFS, stated, “Through the Global Leadership Program, young participants were able to engage directly in international forest cooperation efforts and strengthen their resolve to address the climate crisis.” He added, “We will continue to expand forest education programs that help future generations grow with ecological sensitivity and a sense of global responsibility.”
