''Indonesia supplies 0.5 million ha for afforestation''


Mr. Kaban, Minister of Forestry of Indonesia and Mr. Suh Seung-jin, Chief of Korea Forest Service signed MOU on forestry investment and CDM Cooperation on August 1.


The statement that Indonesia is providing 0.5 million ha for planting land is included in the MOU. The special significance of it is that the two countries are seeking for the win-win way that can lead to sustainable forest development and securing timber resources and carbon sink.


The uncertainty of sparing afforestation land was the main obstacle to forestry investment but will be dismissed through Indonesian government’s endeavor to supply land for afforestation. Therefore, it is expected that more forestry enterprises will get interested in the investment.


0.5 million ha is half of 1 million ha which is the overseas afforestation goal of Korea Forest Service by 2050 and is actually more than the quadruple of 0.12 million ha in which Korea has performed overseas afforestation since 1993. It marks an epoch in the overseas afforestation policy of Korea.


Moreover, the party of Indonesia appeared to be pleased to sign the MOU in terms of forestry technology development and countermeasures to reduction of natural forests by means of afforestation for securing timber resources and cooperation in A/R CDM (Afforestation / Reforestation Clean Development Mechanism)


The successful conclusion of the MOU has been derived from 30-year-cooperative relationship in the forestry field between the two since the 1970’s, such as the nursery project and the mangrove rehabilitation project.


The two countries will build up a Working Group including the academic world, government bodies and private enterprises so as to secure planting land and implement projects.
