[ COP-11 of UNFCCC and COP/MOP-1 of Kyoto Protocol ]
Having recognized that natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunami and hurricane are considerably related to the recent climate change, the Korea Forestry Service has contributed to conservation of the earth environment in many ways by cooperating in the conservation programme for desertification and supporting plantation in developing countries.
COP-11 of United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention and COP/MOP-1 of Kyoto Protocol, which was the first assembly since the effectuation of Kyoto Protocol, in particular, discussed the climate change mechanism (Post-2012) and the future commitment. One of main issues was deforestation in developing countries.
Officials from Korea Forest Service including the director of Forestry Policy Division participated in this conference, which has helped remark a good reputation of the service and establish reliance and trust internationally. In the conference of EIG ( Environmental Integrity Group :Republic of Korea, Swiss, Mexico, Monaco, Lichtenstein) we made a joint agreement on the deforestation issue in developing countries. As representatives of the Government of Korea along with other officials from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, we stressed on significance of cooperation for forestry matters in the bilateral conference with India and China. Through bilateral talks with Japan, two parties reached an agreement to exchange technologies in terms of implementation of the climate change convention and Kyoto Protocol.
