President Roh Moo-hyun and the first lady participated in a planting-tree event for the sixty first arbor day on April 5th in Yeoju, Gyeonggi province arranged by the Korea Forest Service and addressed to participants that we should plant trees not just for green woods but for commercial woods. He also stressed that the public benefit of forests is valued at around 5.9 billion dollars, which means forests make a huge contribution to the public benefits, so when it comes to the economic statistics, both the public benefits and the value of public welfare should be evaluated. In particular, Mr. Roh added that differential property taxes are now under consideration in the case that forests designed in urban areas contribute to the urban environment and the public good.
