The Korea Forest Service(KFS) has established ’2007 Comprehensive Fire Control Action plan’ and is set to operate the spring fire control main office throughout May. 15 in cooperation with related agencies. Regional fire control offices are supposed to adjust their operation schedule based on snowfalls during Jan.
Fire control operations by KFS and local governments have been tightened because fire hazards and risks seem to be increasing due to global warming, continuing winter drought and El Nino.
During the fire caution period, fire precaution activities will proceed in accordance with fire forecast. On top of that, 191 fire surveillance cameras are in full operation and watchdog light-aircraft run regularly in order to better identify fire-prone areas.
The aerial control system has been built up for prompt mobilization within 30-minute and early control, by positioning aircraft in fire-prone areas such as Gangneung, Uljin, and Yeosu. And the number of fire control staff in each region has increased from 20 to 30.
KFS has established the fire control system with integrated command guidelines and a practice manual against fire calamity, and consolidated operational capacity in the field. KFS also tries to get relevant organizations and private sectors engaged in fire precaution activities.
The manager of the Forest Fire Management Team gave his word that the team will exert every effort with the spring fire control main office to secure the people’s safety and property by reducing fire damages and hazards.
KFS expressed that it is very important to raise the public awareness and to encourage the people to cooperate in fire precaution activities since fires occur more often around the thawing season and more fires are of accidental origin by hikers or mountaineers.
