Sharing successful restoration experience with Southern and Eastern Africa

The Korea Forest Service (KFS) recently participated in the Capacity-building workshop for Southern and Eastern Africa on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets held in Livingstone, Zambia from May 12th to May 18th.

Over 50 participants from 14 countries in Southern and Eastern Africa and various international organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP) attended the workshop.

From 2013, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) secretariat has organized a series of capacity-building regional workshops around the globe on ecosystem conservation and restoration to support achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets .

The Director of International Cooperation Division at the KFS, Youngtae Choi, gave a presentation on the successful restoration of the ROK and introduced the Forest Biodiversity Restoration Initiative. At the 12th Conference of Parties to the CBD which will be held in Pyeongchang, Korea, the KFS will formally announce the Forest Biodiversity Restoration Initiative. Through this presentation, the KFS shared its experience and knowledge with African countries and contributed in their own restoration efforts.  

In addition to participating in these workshops, the KFS has been working on the Korean study introducing the Korean National Reforestation Program as part of a global study being coordinated by the CBD Secretariat.

Note 1: In 2010, at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the CBD held in Nagoya, Japan, the new Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 was introduced and selected. The Strategic Plan consists of 20 new biodiversity targets for 2020, termed the 'Aichi Biodiversity Targets'.
