MOU on prevention of desertification in Mongolia

The Korea Forest Service(KFS) and the Mongolian Ministry of Nature and Environment(MNE) signed MOU on bilateral cooperation to prevent desertification and dust and sandstorms at the Daejeon Government Complex on November, 21.

When President Noh Moo-Hyun paid an official visit to Mongolia this May, the agreement on support of long-term afforestation projects to prevent desertification in Mongolia was reached. Since then, KFS and MNE had close discussions about 10-year-plan of plantation projects, which has resulted in the MOU signed by both head delegates, Mr. Yoon Young-kyoon, Director General of Resources Policy Bureau, KFS and Mr. A. Enkhbat, Director General of Development and Strategic Planning Department, MNE, at the 4th meeting of Korea-Mongolia Forest Cooperative Committee.

KFS is set to input 9.5 billion won into plantation projects in Lung, Choir and some desert areas, Mongolia and to implement plantation projects for prevention of desertification and rehabilitation projects , including other related projects such as joint researches, training courses, afforestation technology transfer, experts dispatch and an international symposium.

This singing on MOU can attract international attention to desertification and dust and sandstorms in Mongolia and impacts of them on neighboring countries and also KFS can develop an outstanding afforestation model and recommend it at international level. Therefore, KFS can lead UNCCD and other related organizations to involve in projects of desertification prevention in Northeast Asia.
