Military Force Mobilized for Pine Wilt Disease Prevention

Korea Forest Service Chief Mr. Cho Yon Hwan announced that military force will aid in taking action against Pine Wilt Disease(Pine Nematode) in Busan area.

The meeting for Pine Wilt Disease Action plan was held last March 16 in Busan. City authorities and military unit in Busan agreed in providing squad of 30 persons daily(900 persons/year) until end of April. The squad started on-site operation on March 21.

Korea Forest Service made a formal request on military assistance during the Cabinet Council on Feb. 15. The local authorities continuously noted on the severity of Pine Wilt Disease. After much effort and continuous request for assistance, nearby military base recognized the urgency and was first to be mobilized for Pine Wilt Disease prevention.

Currently in Korea Forest Service, much focus is given to prevention and expansion control for the disease. Pine Wilt Disease Prevention Plan was devised last January and enactment of a Special Act is on the way. Hoping to save pine trees in cooperation with the private, public, and military sector, discussions are ongoing for additional military mobilization in areas other than Busan.
