The fifth session of Korea-China Forestry Collaborative Committee was held on the 13th of October, 2005 in Daejeon-based Government Complex. Mr. Lee Soo-hwa, deputy chief of the Korea Forest Service and Mr. Yang Jiping, deputy director of the Chinese State Forestry Administration signed an arrangement on major forestry cooperative measures between the two countries, such as the importing of Siberian tigers, reforestation for combating desertification in the northwestern regions of China, the control of pine wilt disease, the development of bamboo resources, and ecological forestry. They agreed to closely collaborate with each other in the future.
Pursuant to this arrangement, the Korea Forest Service chief and the Chinese State Forestry Administration director would enter an agreement during the period of the APEC to be held in November, 2005 in Busan, South Korea, to bring in Siberian tigers into South Korea as early as possible, further reinforce bilateral cooperation for the research on the biological control of pine wilt disease, and to achieve the ecological conservation of Mt. Baekdu.
Lastly, the two countries decided to collaborate each other in predicting and forecasting forest fires in the Southeast Asian region through the Northeast Asian Forest Fire Network, and to forge close alliances in implementing a range of projects to combat desertification, overseas forestations, and projects for the expansion of carbon absorbing sources.
Launched in 1994, the Korea-China Forestry Collaborative Committee, a bilateral forestry consultation agency, has so far convened 5 sessions, aiming at maintaining developmental collaborative system in connection with pending forest issues in Southeast Asia, as well as in the two countries through close collaborative relations between South Korea and China in forestry.
