KFS hosts high-level panel discussion on forestry cooperation on the margins of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit

Seoul, June 3, 2024 The Korea Forest Service (KFS), led by Minister NAM Sunghyun, in collaboration with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and National Assembly member JUNG Hee-yong, is hosting the Korea-Africa High-Level Panel Discussion on Forestry and Desertification at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Hotel in Seoul on June 3. The event, themed “Future Forests: Fostering Global Friendship for Sustainable Forestry,” brings together esteemed African ministers overseeing forestry in their respective countries.

This event provides a platform for sharing efforts in each country’s forestry sectors in combating desertification and exploring future cooperation in forestry. It features opening remarks by KFS Minister, welcome remarks by the UNCCD Executive Secretary, and congratulatory remarks by the FAO Forestry Director, Korean National Assembly member, and the Vice President of Malawi.

The KFS highlighted Korea’s rapid national reforestation achievements and its international forestry cooperation, ranging from regional collaborations with Asian nations to continental efforts through international organizations. It also emphasized the need for cooperation in restoring arid regions in Africa.

Notably, the discussion coincides with World Environment Day on June 5, focusing on international cooperation for forest environmental conservation and public awareness to combat desertification.

Minister NAM Sunghyun stated, “This discussion is an opportunity to share Korea’s successful national reforestation experience and expand forestry cooperation with Africa.” He expressed hope that “this event will act as a bridge for Korean forestry companies to enter to African markets, which has infinite growth potential.” Lawmaker JUNG emphasized, “We must not only address current environmental issues but also ensure continuous cooperation to pass on a better planet to future generations.”
