Korea-Mongolia Greenbelt Plantation Proje

1st Phase (2007-2016)
  • The project was implemented by the Korea Forest Service (KFS) of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) of Mongolia to combat desertification and mitigate the impact of sand and dust storms in Mongolia.
  • The project was carried out in Lun Soum, Dalanzadgad and Bayanzag, in which total of about 3,000ha (including 1,430ha of Saxaul plantation and 3 nurseries) of land was planted with trees.
  • The Education Center for Afforestation Technique was established to provide training programs for the experts (about 5,000 experts participated in the program). Furthermore, about 200 government officials and experts from Mongolia were invited to Korea for technology exchange.
2nd Phase (2016-2021)
  • The KFS and the MET signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cooperation in Combating Desertification and Dust/Sandstorms on July 17th, 2016. The MOU was signed to implement follow-up projects of the previous project and to establish urban forests for the residents of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
  • The Ulaanbaatar Urban Forest (aka Korea-Mongolia Friendship Forest) was completed on August 11th, 2021 and 2,592ha-wide plantation was created and transferred to MET.
3rd Phase (2021-2026)
  • MOU on Cooperation in Combating Desertification and Dust/Sandstorms was signed by the KFS and the MET on September 24th, 2021 for the implementation of the 3rd phase of the cooperative project. The objectives of the project are to restore and prevent the forest from the wildfire, and establish infrastructures for reforestation. The project is being implemented in Ovorkhangai, Khovsgol and Selenge.

Korea-Viet Nam Joint Forest Projects

Joint Research for Conserving Biodiversity of Forest Resources
  • Implementing Agencies : Korea National Arboretum and the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR) of the Viet Nam Academy of Science and Technology
  • Project Period : 2016-2019
  • Description : The implementing agencies signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in order to develop scientific-technical cooperation in conserving plant diversity. The Korea National Arboretum conducted a survey in Phia Oac-Phia Den of the nature reserve zone in Cao Bang Province, Viet Nam and collected DNA samples including Ranunculus cantoniensis (Chineses Buttercup) and Schizophragma molle (Japanese Hydrangea Vine), and biodiversity information of indigenous plants
Rehabilitation and Sustainable Management of Mangrove Forests
  • Implementing Agencies : Korea Forest Service (KFS) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) of Viet Nam
  • Project Period : 2020-2026
  • Description : The project aims to rehabilitate and sustainably manage the Mangrove Forest in Red River Delta of Viet Nam, and to provide income generating opportunities to the local residences through restoring the Mangrove Forests and Ocean Ecosystems associated with it. The specific activities of the project include plantation of 330ha-wide mangrove forests, establishment and management of a nursery, capacity building, joint research, etc. Moreover, from 2022, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea participated in the project to implement convergence ODA project where the KFS is responsible for the Rehabilitation of the mangrove forests, while the MOF is responsible for the Establishment of Fishery Infrastructures and Exchange of Technologies.

Korea-Tajikistan Joint Forest Project

1st Phase (2019-2024)
  • Title : Project on Reforestation and Income Generation for Local People in Tajikistan
  • Implementing Agencies : Korea Forest Service (KFS) and Forest Agency under the Government of Tajikistan
  • Description: Through this project, the KFS and the Forest Agency of Tajikistan created Saxaul nurseries and implemented demonstration project (330 ha) in Shahrituz region, and established Pistachio Plantation (30 ha) in Khuroson and Dangara region. They also carried out capacity building programs for the government officials and experts (about 170 personnel) in Tajikistan. Moreover, the project has significantly increased the average annual income of the local residences who participated in the project (No Income: 20%→0% ; 5000TJS<: 0%→60%.)
2nd Phase (2023-2027)
  • Title: Project on Afforestation and Agroforestry to Combat Desertification and Increase Local Incomes in Tajikistan
  • Implementing Agencies : Korea Forest Service (KFS) and Forest Agency under the Government of Tajikistan
  • Description : The KFS and the Forest Agency of Tajikistan agreed upon the implementation of the follow-up project aiming for further plantation of Saxaul (350 ha) and Pistachio (125 ha) to combat desertification, and development of agroforestry (100 ha) and urban forests to enhance the livelihood of the local residences. The project will be carried out in Khatlon, Sughd, Rudaki, and Dushanbe region. Other than the goals mentioned above, the project will also contribute in the capacity enhancement of the experts for sustainable management of the forest, and further strengthen the bond between two countries.
