Cheonmasan (Mt. 天摩山, 812m) rises high in the midst of Namyangju-si (city). Seen from the south, it looks as if a Great Buddhist priest Dharma were sitting with his shoulders heaved, giving an impression of composure and grandeur.
It is high and beautiful all year round. It is covered with snow in winter, has beautiful fresh greens in spring, dark green in summer, and when leaves turn red and yellow in fall it is tinged like a watercolor painting. Although it is close to Seoul, it is steep and high, so it is said that Imkkeokjeong (a Robin Hood) made the headquarter in it and used Machigogae (Hill) as his main field of action.
According to a legend, when Yi Seonggye came to hunt here in the late Goyeo dynasty, he realized that it is very high and steep. So he asked the name of this mountain of a country man but he answered "I don't know it because I'm ignorant.". Yi Seonggye said to himself "Wherever a man go, there are numerous green mountains but this mountain is very high as if a scepter (笏, a thing an official in a court dress held in his hand when he met a king in the Joseon dynasty) were inserted into the sky. If my arms were longer by about three ja (a unit of distance), I could touch the sky (手長三尺可摩天)." Hence the name, Cheonmasan (means a mountain which can touch the sky) originated from it.
There is a high cliff rock near the southwest of the summit and people call it Yangmulbawi (Rock). As spring water gushing out of the rock without cease all year round, it is also called Yangmulbawisaem (Mineral Water Rock Spring). This mountain is suitable for one day hiking because there are a thick forest and many mineral springs with good taste. Also Cheonmasan training center for body and mind is located at the foot of the mountain to help teenagers build healthful physical strength and emotions, freed from city life.
