Gyebangsan (Mt.) is located between Pyeongchang-gun and Hongcheon-gun. It is the fifth highest mountain next to Hallasan (1950m), Jirisan (1950m), Seoraksan (1705m), and Deogyusan (1614m) in South Korea. So on the top of Gyebangsan, you can see mountains at a glance; Odaesan, Gariwangsan, Geumdangsan, Bakjisan, Taegisan nearby, and Seoraksan in the distance. In this mountain the altitude from Unduryeong (Ridge, 1089m) to the top is no more than 488m so you can ascend without much effort. Even if the mountain is quite high, it's perfect even for a novice to go to the top because there is a lot of soil. Well preserved primitive forests, yews, brilliant autumn maples, fantastic snowscape in winter through the beginning of March invite many mountain lovers.
Hiking starts from Unduryeong (Ridge). Up to the top along the ridge, you don't need to worry about getting lost because there is no forked road. Hiking for an hour and a half leads you to 1492 bong (peak). From there it's 30 minutes' walk to the other summit across. Gyebangsan is the root of Charyeong mountain range, connected from Odaesan (Mt.), via Baekdeoksan (Mt.), to Namdaebong (Peak), Chiaksan (Mt.), which divides into central and southern regions of the country.
Up on the top, you can see the backbone of Baekdu Daegan Mountain Range at a glance so it is considered the best lookout in the vicinity.
Seoraksan and vast valleys in Nae-myeon, Hongcheon-gun to the north, Noinbong (Peak) and Daegwallyeong (Ridge) to the east, Heoryeongbong (Peak) and Taegisan (Mt.) over Unduryeong to the west commands a fine panorama. There are two paths to descend the mountain. One is descending to the upper 3-corner crossing in Nodong-ri along the ridge, and the other is toward the house where Yi Seungbok was born, past lower 3-corner crossing. In the winter it's better to descend along the south ridge of Gyebangsan toward Nodong-ri because there is less snow on the ridgeline than in the valley. 2 hours is enough to get to the lower 3-corner crossing in Nodong-ri.
