Daeamsan (Mt.) is located among Mandae-ri, Haean-myeon, and Pallyang-ri, Dong-myeon, Yanggu-gun, and Seoheung-ri, Seohwa-myeon, Inje-gun. It is 1,316m above sea level and well known for its moor on a lofty place. It was recorded as Daeamsan (Mt.) on Gimyojangjeok written in 1759 (35th year of Yeongjo (king) in the Joseon dynasty). During the Korean war, this was a place of a fierce battle, between the South Korean forces and the 2nd armament of north Korean forces. It was recovered by South Korean forces.
A comprehensive science survey upon the 'State of Organisms Living Inside Demilitarized Zone' led by Korean Nature Preserving Scholar Group was performed in 1972 (9.26~10.14) and it was highly evaluated as an ideal place for studying its environment. Descending down from Daeamsan (Mt.) leads to the Big Dragon Swamp and the Small Dragon Swamp in the shape of basin. As they were not created by the regional climate but by a second cause, they are called higher moor. The size of the moor is 150m from east to west and 100m from north to south in an indeterminate form, forming a slow slope from the northwest to the southeast with the degree of more or less 5˚~10˚.
The moor is relatively level, forming the shape of a 1~2m-high ridge at the end of the southeastern part. This swamp is very significant for not only scientific values, but also for rare species such as「Joreumnamul」「Biroyongdam」「Kalibyongdam」「KkeunKkeunijugeok」「Murikki」「Buktongbal」 and 163 other various plants. Also, insects such as 「Byeomaeddugi (grass hopper)」「Chammildeuri maeddugi (grass hopper)」「Aesogeumjaengi (water strider)」「Hongdorichimnorinjae」 have been found here. Like this, the area of truce line up to 155 miles long is a paradise for plants and animals since it hasn't been touched by human influence for more than 50 years after truce. So the primitive forest is well preserved. In this area, 47 kinds of planktons were collected by Kim Duyeong (currently working at students' science hall in Gangweon-do) from May 1968 to Aug. 1969. Also, the kinds of plants living in Daeamsan (Mt.) are 59 families and 123 species in total. Especially 19 unique species and 15 unregistered species have been known so far, making this place a treasury of organisms. It was designated as a nature conservation area along with Daeusan (Mt.) in the vicinity on July.10. 1973.
