Bangjang Mountain
There are three holy mountains in Honam. They are Jirisan (Mt.), Mudeungsan (Mt.), and Bangjangsan (Mt.). Also there are 3 mountains of God which include Bangjangsan along with Yeongjusan (Mt.), Byeonsan (Mt.) in the west coast of Honam.
Bangjangsan is famous as a holy mountain since time immemorial. The line is thick, strong, and deep, encouraging bandits to rob travellers of their belongings.
Whether or not because of the eulalia stock on the peak where Samgakjeong stands there is a story as follows.
There is a song called Bangdeungsanga, one of the five Baekje songs recorded in 'Akji' of Goryeosa (History of Goryeo). In the song, a housewife caught by a group of robbers blamed her husband for not coming to save her, but the exact lyrics are not recorded.
The title of this song 'Bangdeungsan (Mt.)' is the old name of Bangjangsan (Mt.). There are five Baekje songs which are recorded in 'Akji' of Goryeosa (History of Goryeo). They are 'Seonunsanga', 'Mudeungsanga', 'Jirisanga', and 'Jeongeupsa' but the only lyrics recorded are 'Jeongeupsa'. Although the road is now passing through Yanggosaljae (Pass) which crosses the mountain, providing a less savor, the natural recreation forests and clean valley waters still earn great love from the visitors.
