Overview

Jirisan (Mt.) is located on the southern part of Korean peninsula. It possesses large and small ranges of mountains entangled with each other and forming curves. Holding 5000 years of the Korean history that breathes in its bosom, Jirisan reveals its grand image.
Jirisan (Mt.) has been known as one of the 3 mountains of gods along with Geumgangsan (Mt.) and Hallasan (Mt.), and as one of the O-ak (5 mountains) in Korea, holding the position of Namak (southern mountain). The name means, "even the ignorant will become wise if staying here". And it is also called Duryusan (Mt.) since the spirit of Baekdusan (Mt.) flows down through the peninsula up to this mountain, and is also called Bangjangsan (Mt.), which means the dwelling place of highly achieved monks in Buddhism.
Jirisan (Mt.) was designated as the first national park of Korea on December 29th, 1967, and covers parts of 3 provinces, 5 cities or counties, and 15 towns including Gurye-gun in Jeollanam-do, Namwon-si (city) in Jeollabuk-do, Hadong-gun, Sancheong-gun, Hamyang-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do. It is the largest national park taking up 440.485㎢, that is, 2.2 times as large as Seoraksan (Mt.), and 3.4 times as large as Hallasan (Mt.). It possesses Cheonwangbong (Peak, 1,915m), the second highest peak in South Korea, along with 10 steep peaks including Jeseokbong (Peak, 1,806m), Banyabong (Peak, 1,732m), Nogodan (1,507m), 6 valleys including Baemsagol (Valley), Chilseongyegok (Valley), over 10 well-known water falls such as Guryongpokpo (Water fall), Burilpokpo (Water fall), Yongchupokpo (Water fall), and Deungseonpokpo (Water fall). It contains both the cold alpine region and the mild piedmont district, leading to various habitats of 824 kinds of plants keeping their primitive status, 421 kinds of animals, and rare animals and plants such as musk deers, otters, Cheongseolmo (squirrels), badgers, martens, and bears. Also, 10 views of Jirisan (Mt.) including curved current of Seomjingang (River), the breath taking scenery of Nogo Unhae (Cloud Sea) on the side of Nogodan, Piagol maples which are at their peak in the middle of October are famous for their picturesque sceneries. And a number of small shrines and noted temples such as Hwaeomsa (Temple), Ssanggyesa (Temple), Yeongoksa (Temple), Daewonsa (Temple), Silsangsa (Temple) still exist.
