Sobaeksan (Mt.) is one of the famous mountains Baekdudaegan Mountain System possesses. Thrilling mountain ridges are over 20km long and connected to each other. They start from Gungmangbong (Peak, 1,421m) on the east, Birobong (Peak, 1,439m), the first Yeonhwabong (Peak, 1,394m), second Yeonhwabong (Peak, 1,357m), Dosolbong (Peak, 1,314m) across Jungnyeong (Pass). All peaks except Dosolbong (Peak) are about 13km apart from each other in a row. The group of peaks, higher than 1,000m above sea level, veiled in sea of clouds is the greatest sight that can only be seen in Sobaeksan. Lower peaks can be barely seen, covered with fog while tall peaks float over cloud in a variety of shapes as if they were islands. Sobaeksan has dozens of faces. The face in May and June is red. If you visit Sobaeksan in May and June, you can dive into the sea of royal azaleas. The stock of splendid wild royal azaleas flourishes instantly throughout the mountain.
Especially, they are stocked around ridges connecting through Yeonhwabong (Peak), Birobong (Peak), and Gungangbong (Peak). Usually, from the end of May to the beginning of June, Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival and various events such as paragliding, Sanshinje (a religious service for the god of a mountain) are held. And the 5-km-long grassy road from Yeonhwabong (Peak) to Gungmangbong (Peak), is covered with various alpine plants in August, which makes you feel as if you were at a botanical garden on the air. Also, stocks of edelweisses and yews around Bibobong are also famous.
The most venerable valley in Sobaeksan is Heuibanggol (Valley), and most people start their hiking from here. If you hike along this road, you reach Heuibangsa (Temple) and Heuibangpokpo (Water fall). Heuibangpokpo is a water fall located upon 900m above sea level. It is 28m high, and the white splash and loud noise of water fall will drive steamy heat away during the summer. After a walk for several minutes from Heuibangpokpo stands Heuibangsa.
Also, there are Sobaeksan Cheonmundae (an astronomical observatory), Birosa (Temple), Choamsa (Temple), Seonghyeolsa (Temple). The clean waters coming from Birobong (Peak) go down to Ukgeum-ri, Geumgye-ri, Samga-ri, Punggieup, forming Geumseongyegok (Valley), a perfect place for summer vacationing for its clear and cold water, charming waterfalls, and the clean ponds. Also, you might as well take a rest at Jungnyeong inn when passing over Jungnyeong along national road no. 5 through the side of Sobaeksan.
